Guatemalan Ricardo Arjona, who has a nomination for the Grammy, stated a month ago that awards may turn oneself into a music fashion "victim". He also denied he is going back to live in his home country, for now.

Ricardo Arjona said that he is planning to start his international tour in Toluca, Mexico on February or March. He added that he has been considering getting the Mexican nationality, but he questioned "Do you know what it would be for this country if I become a Mexican?" Although he is grateful for the awards he has got, he stated that "those who work in their creative process just to make an award are completely wrong and lost." He added that if someone cares so much for the awards, that artist would have to make songs to continue, or being as successful as before. If it was like that "then I'll have to be always thinking on doing another 'Señora de las cuatro décadas', and that makes you a victim of what is on vogue in order to remain in your place, which is terrible for me," he added. "Then, I should be doing reggaeton now. I'm influenced by some things, but I think that one must do songs to feel good with oneself. He stated that he likes to be in complicity with the audience, and added that "I hope people gets it: (the creative process) must be something egotistical." Arjona described himself as a "quite rootless guy." "I don't find it difficult to move away, because experiences are a more important than melancholy, and novelty has always beaten melancholy." He has been living in Mexico for more than a decade, and stated that he would not be back in his country "for now." "Not being a show off, the fact that I have become a sort of symbol, a Guatemalan flag, it's a heavy weight to carry along all day. I want to have the possibility to get drunk in some place one day and be bad one of these days. "My fellow countrymen love me more than I deserve, it's not that I wouldn't like to live here. "I feel more observed and I feel that people has me in a place in which I have to constantly behave, that gives me a significant lack of freedom, which makes me feel uncomfortable." He added that "For me, Mexico, without any doubt or asking for their permission, is not my second home country, is a country that I feel as mine, it's my home, I feel really comfortable there." He also talked about his Adentro Foundation. This organization will give musical instruments to Guatemalans who do not have enough resources, and will help building art schools. Arjona said that he will start his international tour in a theater in Toluca, Mexico because "it's my luck charm." His album, "Adentro", includes songs such as "Adiós melancolía", "Acompáñame a estar solo", "No me importa nada", "Iluso", "Para bien o para mal", "De vez en mes", "Laura", "A ti", and "Bar". On the other hand, Arjona stated that he is working on a novel which he is planning to finish in 2006. He is also analyzing role of a graphic reporter in an Argentinean-Spanish-Venezuelan production. Arjona, who was in the paparazzi spotlight two years ago for his separation, stated that "they had never been so annoying, because I'm not that attractive for them. Thank God I think I'm not a good magazine seller. "The hardest part is watch TV and see that they're talking about you, and you have to remain quiet despite you want to shout and protest. Because one day I took the hardest decision: remain silent, because if you say something, it will create more comments."

Ricardo Arjona was born 42 years ago, January 19th. CONGRATULATIONS ARJONA!!

Four years ago, on December 2002, I came across a review on Santo Pecado. It was written by an English-speaking person. He put it like this:

"Guatemalan singer-songwriter Ricardo Arjona capped off the year with his release of Santo Pecado. I'm very impressed with what I've heard off this CD so far. It strikes me as closer in tone to earlier releases like Si El Norte Fuerte El Sur. I'm not wild about some of his soft ballads, but I can't help but be impressed by songs like the new Minutos. Good stuff!"

And another one had written something on this two months earlier (Oct. 2002). It read:

"Whenever I hear so much as a mention of soft folksy pop icon, Harry Chapin, my thoughts immediately drift off to picturing a small, cozy, bar in the basement of a brownstone in an upscale part of an east coast city. A place that's comfortable, just a bit smoky, and with the obligatory small stage tucked into a too-tight corner, with little more space than a lone guitarist or keyboard player would need to perch on his stool, crooning his heart-tugging musical tales...

That's sort of the same impression I have of Guatemalan folk rock icon, Ricardo Arjona. While the guy has an image and style that's more like U2's Bono, his musical style is firmly in the folk camp that gave the rock world such gifts as Neil Young or Bob Dylan.

Normally, I like hard driving rock and roll, but every now and then, I really prefer a softer, gentler sound with a more cerebral, thoughtful lyrical message...I prefer something like the sound of Ricardo Arjona.

But enough glittering generalities, let's slide Arjona's CD, Santopecado into the changer and give it a listen...then we'll see how it stacks up against some of his earlier works.

Biggest, Boldest, Brightest...
El Problema is unquestionably the red hot hit of this album. It's got double-barrelled power and impact coming from both the lyrical and the musical sides of the equation.

The lyrics pack their punch by relentlessly pummelling the listener with stacatto delivery of a wash list of things that "the problem" is and isn't. It's like reading a marketing guy's 20-point Power Point slide versus reading one of my overly long reviews. The song has a certain imperitive urgency about it. An urgency that's made all the more convincing with the sharp, quick, strums of the guitar.

Musically, El Problema starts off with a mellow folk rock mood, sounding like something that you'd almost expect to hear from a storytelling songster -- like Harry Chapin -- but the tempo picks up, the mood shifts like dark clouds blowing in at the front of a storm, and the strumming guitars give way to keyboards, percussions, and a background chorus, giving the song depth and emotive power.

The wash list of observations is a technique that Arjona often uses, sometimes providing fodder for his detractors who claim that his lyrics show all the poetic genius of a Bell Telephone book listing. Sometimes it's true -- El Problema works for Arjona, primarily because it sounds really cool with his quick-tempo delivery. But the words themselves get power only from their prima facie meaning -- not from any subtle uses of delicate rhyming or connotation.

Same thing on Quesos, Cosas, Casas -- lyrically, the song is essentially a washlist. Okay, the rich have their diets and the poor have their hunger. That's poignant on the face of it, but no, it's not songwriting sublimity. That's not to say it doesn't work -- lots of artists with a folk bent have used the washlist technique (or a variation on it). It's always worked for Arjona, but it works because he does innovative things with the musical accompaniment, so the songs never end up getting derailed. In the case of Quesos, Cosas, Casas, he's got a wonderful blend of woodwinds with a haunting flute solo. The song takes a mystic flavor that's mellow and reflective. No, not a lyrical masterpiece, but a very nice track, nonetheless.

That's not to say Arjona can't write lyrics -- he sure as heck can, and he's done it on a hundred tracks over his career. He can bend and blend words right alongside the best of 'em, intertwining poetry of language with the symphonic poetry of his complex, but mellow sounding modern folk rock sound.

I liked the tune Vivir Sin Ti Es Posible (living without you is possible) because it's sort of the flip side of the typical mindless pop anthem of total love, oh I can't live without you, gag me with a shovel.

In Vivir Sin Ti Es Posible, Arjona says "living without you is possible, it's not even very hard, I live because it's so easy to breathe (air), I live because I still have my name, blah, blah, blah..." Okay, so I take some liberties with the translations -- you get the gist anyway. It's not a hugely profound thing, it's just a one of a hundred things that separate the true talents of the musical world from silly little talentless pop twits.

[Don't get mad on me R. Martin!]

But I'm getting off track, which is supposed to be the hottest tracks...tracks like Santo Pecado.
I like Santo Pecado for one simple reason: of all the tracks on this CD, Santo Pecado is the one that truly rocks and truly rolls, right from the first searing guitar lick. Big vocal delivery, especially in the chorus, coupled with a bold beat of drums and cymbals make this a winner. Add in the depth that an occasional violin accompaniment brings, and you've got a track with all the complexity and boldness of a bona fide reputation maker.

Arjona's emphasis on social conscious is never far from center stage, and you find it on this disc with songs like La Nena, which is a troubling account of the social turmoil that roils much of Latin America, and indeed, the rest of the world -- problems that are going to be aggravated in the long run if injustices like the currently proposed World Trade Treaties gets shoved down the collective throats of nations that are already choking on economic disparity. Unfortunately, most Americans don't seem to understand (and don't really care) why riots break out everywhere the trade talks take place, or why the treaty is such a cruel, inhuman hoax to play on human beings.

Of the remaining tracks on this disc, some typify Arjona's folksy, mellow, soft rock sound. Most are allegorical. None are what I consider true standouts. Good, basic, general listening tracks, but not big standouts in my book...

Bottom Line...
There's some good stuff here, and it's a solid piece of work, overall. I'm impressed with Santo Pecado, and I absolutely love El Problema. This is a better disc than Arjona's earlier Galería Caribe release, but it lacks the depth and insight of Si El Norte Fuera El Sur. By the numbers: 2 standout tracks, about 5 that are very good, and 7 that are good and that are typical of Arjona's sound, but not particularly remarkable. Thankfully, no real hose baggers.

A solid 4-star piece of work, but minus one star for ticking me off with the stupid VCD. Let's call it 3 stars, but I recommend buying only the version without the bonus video disc."

It's just amazing how Ricardo Arjona plays with words and composes a piece of Art with them. Only he could write a song about women and menstrual cycles and sound like poetry. He is one of the the best Latin American composers.

"Adentro" is probably one of the best albums of Arjona, all the songs are excellent, specially "Mojado" which is about a political issue. I've been waiting for this album and now it is finally here. The combination of genres and lyrics is very good, especially in "Iluso" (one of my favorites of "Adentro"). "Para que me quieras como quiero" is also a good one.

Ricardo Arjona Vivo --This is a great CD because it deals with real true life events that many people can relate to.

Ricardo Arjona is without a doubt a great latin singer. But before you even think about buying this CD you need to consider one thing.

Do you speak Spanish? Although I love Arjona's music I think the strong point of listening to him is his lyrics. He is one of the only latin singers who puts current important events into his songs. He also tells how things REALLY are and how they COULD be. If you don't speak Spanish I think you should BEGIN a Spanish course somewhere. When I was a Spanish teacher in Guatemala I used to take with me some Arjona's CDs to my classroom.

Arjona is live in this CD. It takes place in Guatemala. It became the biggest concert ever in Central America. It was also free. I do warn you though some of Arjona's lyrics can be offensive, if you are a Christian. Although most of them are true. One of my favorite songs of his is called Mesías, which is NOT on this CD.

It basically is an Beatles song... remember "Revolution" by The Beatles? Mesías has a mellow beat. However if you already speak Spanish and are really interested about how things are in Central and South America I think you will love this CD. This is sort of a gretest hits CD, but also has some new songs. Some of my favorites are....

DESDE LA CALLE 33. This is my favorite song on the whole album. I actually listened to this song many years ago. It is one of the new songs (on this album) and you can't find it on any other CD, except the old one I got. This song has an awesome beat and tells how Arjona grew up. Desde La Calle 33 is based on a street it actually exists in Antigua, but it is "Avenida 23". It is a very touching song, it tells about his first time having sex and smoking and gettig kicked out of school. Here are the lyrics=>

DIME QUE NO. This is one of Arjona's most popular songs. It is a cool ballad. It has been around for many years and people still love it. It tells how hard love is, and how sometimes even when we know that we can't be with someone we still, deep in our hearts want them to say yes... before they say no.

Si El Norte fuera El Sur. This is arguably Arjona's most popular Song EVER. It is funny at first but as you listen to it you start to think. It tells what would happen if the north, meaning the United States, was the south, meaning Mexico, Central and South America. This song will make you realize how hard it is to live in a foreing country (outside US).

Historias. This song may make you cry. It tells of Arjonas's history with his family, but it could easily relate to any poor family's history. Some of the verses tell about how for Arjona's birthday his parents would spend all their money on a chocolate just for him. It is a great song.

Desnuda. This song is not on this CD. You see, I am listening to the CD I bought when it just came out and it was a speacial promotion CD and this track was a bonus song. However, I did buy the new one and it doesn't have this song. Any ways, this is a great song. Its lyrics aren't that great, it talks about Arjona's love for naked women, but its tune are great. This is NOT a new song so if your CD doesn't come with this song I encourage you to buy "Sin daños a terceros" which also has this song.

Señora de los 4 décadas. This is also a great song and has a good meaning for all you "OLD" women out there. It is actually on MILF. When I listen to this song I think of one of my very first sex experiences. I dated a 'señora'. I was 14, she was 26 and married. It was around Christmas.

Historia de Taxi. It is mixed with the Ella y El song. Which are two very different love songs. But overall this a a very good CD for all who can speak Spanish or wanna learn it.

In February 2002, I read a review on Ricardo Arjona and his album Galería Caribe called: Songs That Make the Whole World Sing.

It read like this:

"I absolutely love the way Ricardo Arjona fuses styles from throughout the Caribbean and Central American region to create a very distinctive and unique sound. Just listen to some of these songs and try to pick out the merengue, the salsa, and the reggae. Listen to the way that these sounds just meld into one another and merge with Arjona's deep passionate voice. Truly remarkable!

Singer Songwriter
There's a heck of a lot of singers in the world whose voices I love hearing, but I can't help but save my deepest respect for the people who not only can sing, but who actually create the works themselves. I like singers who write their own songs and who have the guts to stand behind them by pouring their soul into every performance of their works. I like people with enough of an ear to produce their own work. People who can combine these skills are, in my opinion, the people who deserve to be called "musicians".

Ricardo Arjona is definitely in that elite club. Scan through the credits on this CD and you'll see next to almost every song "Letras y musica por Ricardo Arjona" (lyrics and music by...) Check out the credits in the liner notes: yep, Arjona's name is listed next to "Producción" too.

When you buy a Ricardo Arjona CD, you really get something that represents the artistic soul of an individual. I like that idea...not that it should really matter ultimately since cool sounds are cool sounds, but to me it does matter. At least in the realm of respect...and Arjona is definitely a guy I can respect, and not just for his artistic integrity, but for his ethics as well.

Ricardo Arjona has often been called a "songwriter with a conscience" and you don't have to listen to too many songs before you start catching on to how he earned that moniker. The guy is a moral champion of the poor underclass of Central America. He sympathises with the indios, the blacks, the paisanos, and the economically disenfranchised. But Arjona doesn't preach. He observes. He describes the human condition. He tells stories.

High Points of Galería Caribe
One of the coolest songs on this CD is Mujer de Guanahaní. I love the fast salsa beat and the sing-song sound of the lyrics. This is also a perfect example of Arjona's social conscience rearing its head since the song is a sort of allegory of the Caribbean everyman, or in this case, maybe everywoman would be more like it. Cerebral lyrics -- not the ditzy, substanceless pablum that you get from pop music. Here, I'll translate a few verses so you can check it out...

'Times of colonization, subjugation, and the fusion of liberties and death.
These are drawn on your skin, Woman of Guanahaní, the payment of fate.
You have the body of a dream of a story that lies in your belly,
daughter of this sea, of slavery, of a conqueror of the tanned indians, and of the times.
You are an invention of the sea that shouldn't think, that kills the vision.
If the past is wrong in your story, you can't hide the sun behind a finger.
Princess of copper, seaweed, and heart, bring me a message from Guanahaní...'

I also like the poignant lyrics of Un Caribe en Nueva York. When I hear the tune, I can just imagine a guy laying back in the grass, watching the clouds float by as he ponders the fate of immigrants who come to the city with huge dreams of becoming the next Sammy Sosa. This is a great story that evokes powerful images, and it's a great tune to listen to if you want to get an idea of what Arjona's music sounds like. It sounds like Jim Croce on salsa.

When I reviewed Si El Norte Fuera El Sur a few months ago I talked quite a bit about how Arjona sounds like Jim Croce, and I still just can't get that comparison out of my mind. In most of his tunes he sounds like a friggin' dead ringer for Croce's kind of deeply melodic voice. His songs also are story-oriented in the same way as Croce's were, and if it weren't for the salsa beat, the congas, and the bright horn sounds that typify Caribbean music, you'd swear that you were listening to a latin Jim Croce!

Cuando is a perfect example of this. Listen to it. Now tell me that voice isn't Jim Croce....tell me. Okay, okay, I know it's really Ricardo Arjona but...whew!

Cuando is also probably Arjona's biggest hit off this CD. I hear it played an awful lot, and I think it's because the song is softer, slower, and more romantic and passionate than a lot of his other stuff. It plays to the emotional female audience who seem to love Arjona's deeply passionate singing voice. Of course the lyrics play to that too....rough translation:

'When was the last time you fell in love and felts so free?
When was the last time you kissed so passionately
while mumbling my name?
When was the last time your pride
made you choose to cry for not forgiving me?....'

Chicks love that stuff! (And this is a pretty good CD to play when romancing the latina babes...)

When I first got this CD, I didn't really care for the song Mesías, which opened slow and had a lot of really slow-moving parts to it interspersed with a smattering of fast riffs. But the song grew on me. I liked listening to the story of Arjona's take on the typical yuppie New Yorker lifestyle with kung-fu classes, a beeper, chatting with Bill Gates over coffee in a jazz club, and chatting with God via the internet. It's kind of funny, and the song really grew on me to the point where I now think of this song as one of my favorites.

One of the things I really like about this CD is the inclusion of different versions of some of the songs, particularly acoustic remixes, which I always really like since they feel more intimate and heartfelt to me. I love the acoustic remix of Receta, especially the slow guitar plucking of the opening. It almost makes me feel like I'm in a cozy little pub having a tall glass of stout by the fireplace as I listen to live music by a talented young guy perched on a bar stool with his guitar...
Tracks in Wax...
This is one of the longest CDs I've heard -- a whopping 77 minutes of tunes on a single disc. Here's what you get in those minutes:
1. Carabelas
2. Mujer de Guanahaní
3. Lo Poco Que Queda de Mí
4. Un Caribe en Nueva York
5. Cuando
6. Receta
7. Sólo Quería un Café
8. Mesías
9. Te Enamoraste de Ti
10. Lo Poco Que Queda de Mí (versión acústica)
11. Si Usted la Viera (el Confesor)
12. Receta (versión acústica)
13. Pensar en Ti
14. Pensar en Ti (versión acústica)
15. Cuando (versin pop)
16. Te Enamoraste de Ti (versión acústica)
17. Sólo Quería un Café (versión acústica)
18. Porque Hablamos (dueto con Ednita Nazario)

Bottom Line
Galería Caribe is a great album. It doesn't pack quite the volume of powerhouse hits as Si El Norte Fuera El Sur, but I think it makes up for it with some more intensely passionate tunes and it makes up for it in spades with that awesome mix of acoustic remixes. All in all, an outstanding collection from an immensely talented artist. Arjona fans would do well to snag this CD!"

Con tu falda arremangada, con mi angustia recurrente, con tu espalda en tres almohadas y mi astucia haciendo un puente. Tu pezón amenazando y mi boca haciendo fiesta, un colchón de contrabando y la ropa haciendo siesta.
